Pyramid Tent

This is an ode to my pyramid tent. I picked it up used from eBay, waterproofed the seams, and took it with me out into the wilderness. Life has not been the same ever since.

Waking up in the circus tent after my first night ever sleeping in it - to quite the view!

I am particularly fond of the floorless pyramid tent because you can really mold it to your liking when snow camping. You can dig out benches, sleeping platforms, a kitchen counter that you can cook on while standing up straight, etc. It’s all very civilized. You don’t even have to leave your home to collect snow for melting!

And if you’re not snow camping, then you can pile hot rocks from the fire inside the tent and make a sauna - which is a lovely experience to share with some friends.

It doesn’t look like much, but making the dream come true: my first backcountry sauna on a very cold and windy desert night. Many thanks to the friends who believed in me and dutifully gathered then piled rocks in the fire not knowing what treasure …

My Black Diamond Megalight has been good to me, and I intend to use it for a long time to come. I do dream of the Hyperlite Mountain Gear UltraMid, if only for the incredible aesthetics that probably make you feel like you’re waking up in a spaceship on a foreign planet (this is why I snow camp). Of course, it’d probably be wise not to have the white tent in the white snow environment, as many a mountaineer have lost their life from not being able to find their tent in an unexpected whiteout when they had only left for a few moments to take a pee or grab some gear from outside. Regardless, the Ultramid’s Dyneema composite fabric is quite impressive, and I look forward to the material making its way into more of our goods.
